Fed: Vital to maintain diplomacy with N Korea - Macklin
Acting Opposition leader JENNY MACKLIN has urged the federal government to ensure diplomaticlinks with North Korea remain open for the sake of regional security.
Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says plans to open an embassy in the capital Pyongyanghave been shelved because of the tense stand off over North Korea's nuclear weapons program.
Mr DOWNER says the government has warned North Korea that normalising relations betweenthe countries can't proceed while the regime refuses to comply with nuclear non-proliferationobligations.
Ms MACKLIN supports the decision to temporarily shelve the plan, but says it's vitalthat diplomatic lines of communication remain open.
She there needs to be greater diplomatic activity between the government and othercountries in the region to impress upon North Korea the importance of bringing their nuclearactivity back under international surveillance.
